This INSET has two emphases: (1) to explore the various facets of Subject Knowledge For Teaching and Learning in Mathematics, all rooted in practical examples and (b) a practical workshop to get to grips with the DrFrostMaths online learning platform, which has a database of nearly 30,000 questions (mostly from past papers) that can be set as work, used to create worksheets and practised independently by students, all supported with a large collection of teaching videos.
The half-day INSET will include talks on:

  • Effective Subject Knowledge for Teaching and Learning in Mathematics: I discuss the themes and learning paradigms that have motivated how I construct lesson resources and teach lessons, many inspired by other teachers, as well as offering a number of practical ideas and for lessons.
  • The DrFrostMaths online platform: A tutorial on all the main functionality on the online platform, including managing classes, schemes of work, browsing questions, setting both homework and assessments, timestables, creating worksheets, monitoring progress, the "DrFrost Live!" game.
  • Case Scenarios: How the online platform can be used for a variety of more specific scenarios, e.g. intervention, mentoring programmes, whole-year formal examinations, enrichment programmes, use within lessons, encouraging independent practice, rewarding achievement.
  • Practical workshop: You are encouraged to bring a laptop/netbook. There will be supervised groups helping you get to grips with the various aspects of the platform.

About Dr Frost

Dr Jamie Frost has taught maths for 7 years; he was previously a PhD student at Oxford University (winning a Teaching Excellence Prize), prior to which he coded trading algorithms for an investment bank. His teaching resources have been downloaded 3 million times and his new online platform has over 100,000 registered users. He recently won a Pearson Teaching Prize, and will be appearing on BBC2 in October on 'Britain's Classroom Heroes'. His passion is to to inspire and engage all maths learners across the ability spectrum and regardless of financial background, and both his resources and online platform continue to be completely free to all.

"Dr Frost is an outstanding teacher. He has had a knack of making complicated material simple and accessible but also exciting and inspiring. One of the things that makes Dr Frost exceptional is the way he has used technology to enable this knack to positively impact such a wide audience of students and teachers all over the world (not just those lucky enough to be taught by him). Its design and functionality arguably surpass all other educational platforms – quite remarkable given that it’s provided free to all schools. Students and colleagues alike are continually amazed at the transformative impact Dr Frost’s teaching, resources and use of technology has had on the way Maths is taught at Tiffin."
Ross McGill (@TeacherToolkit) and Bob Twells, winners of Secondary Teacher and Primary Headteacher of the Year respectively in the Pearson Teaching Awards.
